unrivaled and,due to the fact of enhanced manufacturing techniques, marking the tran-sition from the experimental to the commercial stage, first costis no longer a deciding aspect favoring reciprocating engines. Compared with reciprocating steam and gas engines, steamturbines demand much smaller sized and less costly foundations, occupyless floor space, call for fewer attendants, and because no lubrica-tion is necessary for any parts in make contact with with the steam, the con-densation becomes directly offered for feed water. The highestsuperheats can be employed with no affecting the choice of lubri-cants, and the price of oil for lubrication is extremely low. A steam turbine of the simplest type is basically a wheelsimilar to an ordinary water wheel, which is moved around bya steam jet impinging on its blades. Steam is directed againstthe turbine wheel by nozzles or related passages delivering the * The question of the most profitable vacuum for provided circumstances is discussedon pages 365 to 373.
