ed with babbitt.The valve plates and valves are of gunmetal throughout, thevalves themselves becoming of the Kingborn variety. The circulating water is handled by a centrifugal pump, andis developed to deal with 19,000 lbs. of steam per hour. Thepump casing is of cast-iron, with Delta metal blades. The shaftis of comparable material with strong gunmetal glands fitted withself-oiling arrangements. The motor driving this pump is ofthe semi-enclosed multipolar continuous-present type, made to operate at an typical pressure of 525 volts. The circulatingwater is taken from the turbine race by means of a cast-irongrating, and is returned to the race at a decrease point following pass-ing through the condenser. Fig. 18 shows the basic lay outof the condensing plant. The discharge from the condenser is four-in. diameter cast-ironpiping, y§ in. thick, and is taken to the river.
